Maritime Pathways – Scottish Maritime Cluster Career Inspiration

Maritime Pathways – Scottish Maritime Cluster

Scottish Maritime Cluster has developed a school outreach programme, Maritime Pathways, for secondary school pupils (S3). The aim of the programme is to encourage the next generation to consider a career in the maritime sector and attract a new wave of future maritime professionals.

Over 95% of the UK’s imports and exports are transported by sea, making the maritime industry the third-largest revenue generator in the UK, with many potential career options. From working at sea, in ports or in the city, to cleaning the oceans of plastic or designing superyachts, maritime is big business.

With many routes into these careers available through apprenticeships, interns, cadetships, college or university, Maritime Pathways aims to showcase a versatile industry to those that may have never considered it before.

What's included

The event is designed to engage pupils through a blend of industry insight and hands-on activities, helping to build key STEM skills and soft skills such as teamwork, communication, creativity and problem-solving through activities such as the ‘build a boat’ challenge.  Alongside this, pupils will gain insight into the wide range of careers in the maritime sector, hearing from young professionals and apprentices who work in the sector.
