From Class Clown to Restaurant & Bar Supervisor: Ally’s DYW Story

DYW Argyll & Bute

Ally attended Dunoon Grammar School, where he enjoyed subjects such as French, Physics and Maths. Looking back, he describes himself as a capable student who perhaps didn’t always apply himself as much as he could have.

“When I moved to Dunoon, it gave me the opportunity to become the class clown,” Ally says. “I enjoyed school, but that came at the expense of some of my school work, and I didn’t achieve the grades I would have needed to go to university.”

Like many young people leaving school, Ally wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to do next. Encouraged by his mum, he decided to approach Portavadie to express an interest in working there. That decision would prove to be a turning point.

A Career with Opportunities

Today, Ally oversees the daily running of the restaurant and bar operation, supporting colleagues and ensuring guests receive excellent service.

He believes hospitality offers fantastic opportunities for young people, particularly those who are willing to work hard and embrace new experiences.

“If you’re prepared to work hard and listen to those around you, hospitality can take you anywhere. The skills you gain are transferable and can open doors across Scotland, the UK and even around the world.”

Top Skills for Success in Hospitality

According to Ally, three key skills are essential for anyone considering a career in hospitality:

Communication – Being able to interact confidently with customers and colleagues is vital in a busy hospitality environment.

Ally’s advice to young people: “Don’t be afraid to give opportunities a go. You don’t need to have your whole future mapped out when you leave school. If you work hard, listen, learn from others and stay open to new experiences, you can build a successful career.”

Listening – Understanding customer needs and learning from more experienced colleagues helps you grow and develop in your role.

Customer Service – Creating a positive experience for guests is at the heart of every successful hospitality business.

Ally also highlights the importance of strong people skills, as hospitality brings you into contact with people from different backgrounds, cultures and countries every day.
